{"id":4912,"date":"2019-01-07T10:39:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T15:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aboutmpswr.wpengine.com\/?p=4912"},"modified":"2021-09-15T17:02:45","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T17:02:45","slug":"tips-for-dangerous-winter-driving-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/blog\/tips-for-dangerous-winter-driving-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Dangerous Winter Driving Conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tying into one of our earlier blog posts, about winter safety kits for your vehicle,\u00a0it\u2019s important to think about driving for the conditions as well.\u00a0 \u00a0After 30+ years in the <a href=\"https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/commercial-services\/snow-ice-management\/\"><strong>snow removal<\/strong><\/a> industry, we\u2019ve become experts at recognizing and maneuvering in winter weather conditions.<br \/>\nWinter weather can result in dangerous driving conditions.\u00a0 It\u2019s crucial to respect these conditions and drive accordingly.\u00a0 Whether it be snow or ice, your car will react differently, and you must take the appropriate precautions. Here are some helpful tips we\u2019ve put together for all winter drivers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/seasons-black-ice-on-country-road-picture-id887287036.jpg\" alt=\"street at night during snow fall\" width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/seasons-black-ice-on-country-road-picture-id887287036.jpg 800w, https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/seasons-black-ice-on-country-road-picture-id887287036-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/seasons-black-ice-on-country-road-picture-id887287036-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong><u>Icy Conditions:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nThese are perhaps the most dangerous as it can be difficult to tell if there is ice on the road.\u00a0 We will list a few icy driving tips to be aware of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watch for \u201cshine\u201d or \u201cglare\u201d on the roads, black ice reflects more light than water alone.<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye on the temperature. Sometimes even driving to Newmarket from Markham can be enough of a temperature drop that the roads change from wet to icy.<\/li>\n<li>Knowing the ground temperature is more important than the air temperature. Even if the air temperature is above 0 degrees Celsius, precipitation can still freeze on the roads if the ground temperature is below 0.<\/li>\n<li>Leave a safe stopping distance. Icy conditions can increase stopping distance by 10 times.<\/li>\n<li>Slow down! You can\u2019t be in a rush.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to be late for work just accept it and drive according to the conditions.\u00a0 The difference in being 10 vs 20 minutes late, is not worth the risk to yourself and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/winter-driving-in-snow-picture-id182492432.jpg\" alt=\"cars driving in snow\" width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/winter-driving-in-snow-picture-id182492432.jpg 800w, https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/winter-driving-in-snow-picture-id182492432-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aboutmps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/winter-driving-in-snow-picture-id182492432-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong><u>Snowy Conditions:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nSnowy conditions are arguably more common than icy conditions and require similar precautions as were noted above.\u00a0 However, below is a list of some snow specific driving precautions to take.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be wary of passing on two lane roads. When passing another vehicle, you must accelerate.\u00a0 This acceleration makes it very easy for your vehicle to slide and lose control.\u00a0 Its safer to wait until the road splits into two lanes to pass.<\/li>\n<li>During heavy snow, small windrows (piles) of snow tend to build up in between lanes. When changing lanes through these snow piles, it is important to maintain your speed.\u00a0 If you decelerate as you drive through these windrows, it becomes more likely that the snow can pull the front of your vehicle and cause the back end to slide.<\/li>\n<li>Visibility can often be drastically reduced during a snowstorm. Ensure your lights are on so that you are visible to other vehicles, and travel at a safe speed based on your line of sight, or how far ahead of you is visible.<\/li>\n<li>Be aware of where you park. Always remember that plows are out on the roads and they push the snow to the sides or the road.\u00a0 If you park in an area that has not been plowed, ensure your vehicle is somewhere that it will not be buried when the street plows go by.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these tips are important to keep in mind when driving in poor conditions, but the safest bet of all is to simply not drive!\u00a0 Wait until the next day to go shopping, change your dinner reservations, whatever the case may be.\u00a0 If it\u2019s possible, it is always best to be safe and stay home during a storm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tying into one of our earlier blog posts, about winter safety kits for your vehicle,\u00a0it\u2019s important to think about driving for the conditions as well.\u00a0 \u00a0After 30+ years in the snow removal industry, we\u2019ve become experts at recognizing and maneuvering in winter weather conditions.
